BC Building Electrification Roadmap 2026

April 2026

The 2026 BC Building Electrification Roadmap (“Roadmap”) is a province-wide plan to accelerate the transition to high-efficiency electric buildings. It calls on actors across BC—including governments, utilities, building owners and managers, trades, professional associations, and others—to take coordinated action to electrify space and water heating across the building stock within 20 years.

The Roadmap outlines key steps and critical actions to sustain momentum over the next five years and realize the benefits of a largely electrified building sector. These actions include improved energy efficiency, deep emissions reductions, and healthier, more comfortable buildings. They also support local job growth, particularly in skilled trades, and make the most of BC’s reliable, clean electricity system.

The 2026 Roadmap builds on momentum created over the past five years through both public and private sector leadership, including stronger policies, expanded industry knowledge, new technologies, and more projects on the ground. Many actions recommended in the 2021 BC Building Electrification Roadmap are already underway, with several fully implemented.

Despite this progress, significant challenges remain. Barriers vary by region and building type, and further action is needed to enable a province-wide transition to an all-electric building sector.

To address this, the Roadmap identifies specific actions for BC’s four main building sub-sectors:

  • Existing commercial and institutional buildings
  • Existing apartment-style buildings
  • Existing ground-oriented residential buildings
  • New construction

The Roadmap also acknowledges the very real concerns around affordability in BC. It outlines multiple ways to reduce the costs of electrification projects, both capital and operating, and is designed to ensure that people of all ages, incomes, and backgrounds can access and benefit from building electrification.

Informed by engagement with over 200 stakeholders, the 2026 Roadmap provides clear direction for the next five years and supports sustained collaboration and action across the building sector.
